Statement of Principles

I/we believe in our community, our children, our schools, and our future. But I/we know Cleveland will thrive in a demanding global economy only if it puts Cleveland's children first.

I/we agree that:
  • Cleveland’s students deserve an education that prepares them to be successful in college and the work place.
  • Cleveland’s children can succeed if our schools are fundamentally transformed.
  • Quality schools will anchor our neighborhoods, and help attract and retain families in Cleveland.
  • Teachers, principals and administrators share responsibility for student achievement and are accountable for their own performance.
  • Today’s realities demand real change and sacrifice from all adults involved in education, if we truly put Cleveland’s children first.
I/we believe that transforming Cleveland’s schools is not just possible; it’s something we can and must do. I/we will:
  • Support the Academic Transformation Plan proposed by Dr. Eugene Sanders, Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO. It’s based on solid research and modeled on what’s working in urban school districts across America. Its goals are ambitious, but realistic:
  • Increase graduation rates from 54% to 90% in five years.
  • Prepare graduates to be college and job-ready.
  • Continuously improve state ratings in every school, so that in five years, zero schools are failing.
  • Hold everyone – teachers, principals, and administrators – accountable for success.
  • Support Cleveland schools that currently are models for what works, where students are meeting and exceeding high expectations, great teachers and principals live up to high standards, and learning takes place in a positive environment with a challenging curriculum.
  • I/we believe in our community, our children, our schools, and our future. I/we believe we must put Cleveland’s children first.

I/We endorse the statement of principles listed above
